View Full Version : Dermatolipectomy vs. Tummy Tuck

I just received my approval letter from my insurance company for a "Dermatolipectomy". I waited 1 year 2 months for this letter. I'm so happy but confused now. When I met with the surgeon a year ago he spoke about a panniculectomy and referenced a tummy tuck (tighten muscles after removal of skin/fat). So my question is "Is the dermatolipectomy the same procedure?" I want my stomach muscles re-tighten at the sametime of removing the fat and excess skin. Will this happen with the dermatolipectomy? Or will I have to pay out of my pocket for this to happen?
Thanks, Nicole

The literal definition of dermatolipectomy is surgical removal of skin and fat. Although it does not technically include repair of the muscles, your plastic surgeon will probably fix that too while he/she is there.

You should check with both your plastic surgeon and your insurance carrier BEFORE surgery so that there are no surprises. Ask your plastic surgeon if he or she will bill the insurance for dermatolipectomy only, or also for repair of diastasis recti. If your surgeon bills the muscle repair separately, then you may be charged.

If your plastic surgeon does bill it separately, there is a chance that your insurance may require pre-authorization and documentation for a diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles). And, if so, this has to be done before surgery.

Good luck!
