View Full Version : Under Eye Skin--Retnoids/Prevage???

Although, all the research on Avage (a prescription retnoid) and Prevage included the under-eye area with excellent results, I have noticed when I use these products (not together and sometimes not daily, I also use kinerase and shisedio benefiance under my eyes in conjunction with either product) it appears to make my under-eye area look more wrinkled and generally "crispy" rather than smoother and etc. It took quite some time to recover and a constant application of moisturizer!

Are these products just not safe for the under eye area (regardless of the research stats)? I am using these things as a preventative measure, and am worried I am doing more damage than good. I am worried I will do permanent damage, and on top of that I don't want to look to worse than I do before I used them!!! If anyone knows about this topic please let me know! Also, any advice on great under-eye alternatives would be excellent.

Thanks!

I hate prevage! Same reasons....just after a few applications I got the same dried out wrinkled look..stopped immediately and went back to my good old vaseline at night and stivectin (sp) during the day. It was a total waste of good and a lot of money in my books.

Don't get me wrong, I love prevage and avage (prescription retnoid) on my face, neck, décolleté--just not under-the-eye! Do you use strivectin eye cream under your eyes, and I totally agree, when undereyes are really dry the old school vasoline seems to do what most high end beauty products cannot!

Although, I have to say Shiseido-Benefiance-revitalizing eye cream is an awesome moisturizer for evening, but it's a little heavy for under make-up use. I just want a great anti-oxidant/anti-aging product for my undereye area that's not going to give me wrinkles where there previously were none!

Thanks for your response! Hopefully there is an answer out there somewhere! ;)

Well the reason I also don't like prevage is that it broke me out acne on every other place I used it. It is definitely not for me. Dried my eyes out and made the other parts of my face so oily, and i already do have oily skin, that it was a mess.

I just thought it was going to protect my face from the aging process, got much more than i bargained for.

I like to use products by Mario Badescu..great for my oily skin without drying me out too much.

wow, that really sucks! yeah, i have normal skin, normal dry in the winter (however, my skin will definitely break-out if it's too creamy), but yeah, i started using it for the same reason, and luckily it worked well elsewhere, but i can't seem to find a high-grade anti-aging cream for my undereye area. :(

maybe they'll come up with something specifically formulated for the undereye.

The eyelid skin is really thin and delicate. Avage under the eyes may cause wrinkling at first but if you can suffer through that for a few weeks or possibly months(yeah, I know it's a long time), then eventually your skin will thicken and smooth out.

Suz, when you used Prevage was it the original green packaging, or was it the new PrevageMD in the silver pump? They reformulated it since it's original release and it seems to have fixed some of the original concerns. In some patients, using Prevage in conjunction with retinoids (like Retin-A) cause sensitivity, but not in everyone. I couldn't use the original version, but I haven't had any problems with the new PrevageMD (http://shop.beautysurg.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=5842) .

Thanks for the info. The prevage I used is in a pump, but I don't recall it having MD tagged onto it. It sounds like it would be a good product, but being a single woman who is trying to look better, thinking that it might take months for the side effects to show progress isn't something I am ready to try. And then I still have the acne issue with it..So guess I'll have to keep looking. But your information was great.

I have been looking for treatments for undereye wrinkles too...and am currently trying retin-A (I've always been told by doctors/dermatologists that it is the best thing for those types of wrinkles)....Well, after nearly 2 weeks of using the stuff on a nightly basis....my undereyes look worse too-I'm very crispy!! I'm going to try and stick it out, because I've used retin-A on acne that I had on my chest area and it made my skin so soft and creamy--it took about 2-3 months of daily use and I was so flaky at first....my doctor said to use it every other day if I'm sensitive--but then it takes longer to achieve smooth skin....

What if you just used the retinoid/retin-A product under your eyes at night or every other day and used a very moisturizing cream in the morning before your makeup???

I'm going to try it and see how it works...

Retin A on the upper and lower eyelid skin will eventually help smooth and tighten the skin, but that's only if you can suffer through the swelling that it will inevitably cause.

Most people can't deal with the peeling, itching, and swelling on the eyelids. If you've done 2 weeks already, that's great. It might take another 4 before the reaction subsides and you start to see some results.

I found something else that's new and seems to help with the crispy look--at least while my skin is adjusting to the retinoid product/retin-a...L'Oreals new "collagen" wrinkle filler...I think it's called Wrinkle Decrease Collagen Filler...it's not a miracle, but helps somewhat, feels good, and is pretty inexpensive ($18 per tube).....I put Creme de la mer on first, a moisturizing eye cream, then the Wrinkle Decrease under my eyes and around my mouth...

Hope that helps!

Hi,

My experience with Garnier under eye cream has been good. No itches, dryness too but yes, you have to be patient to see results..
It has worked for me but over a few weeks.Has to be used regularly.
