i would like to have veneers done. I just came from the dentist and she told me i have 2 options. porcelain or self molded?
the porcalain are more expencive and i will need to wait on them about 3 weeks until they are ready.. and have to stay with a temporary thing until that.
Is it worth it? or are the non porcelain ones nice as well?
thank you for your imput :)

I have 8 porcelain veneers on my top teeth. I've had them about two years and so far I've only minorly chipped one. I think it was from grinding my teeth and not wearing my night guard. The dentist thought it was strange.
Anyway, I think they are great and I love them and was so glad I did it. They take a long time to do. One visit to the dentist for me was 5 1/2 hours long. The temporary ones feel like fake teeth and you need to use a water pic to clean between them since you can't floss and there will be dead gum tissue coming off (at least that was the case with mine). Your temps will have the shape of your soon to be veneers, but mine stained real easy. Don't worry about that because your permanent ones won't stain like that and after a day your permanent ones will feel like your normal teeth.
I don't know anything about self molded ones, but my vote is for porcelain veneers. They are expensive, but well worth it! I think mine cost about $1,000 each and that is in Arkansas for comparison. I've also heard you can get them really cheap in Mexico if you are that gutsy. Good luck!

Thanks ElanElain, i found your post helpful as it addressed a few of my concerns!
I've also heard that it's better to go with the porcelain veneers-apparently they look most like your real teeth compared to the self moulded and they are more durable. Yes, they are more expensive but i don't think you can skimp on something like that.
I also grind my teeth at night and was worried the dentist would try and talk me into crowns instead but the dentist said he will give make me a night guard with my veneers. I am getting about 15 done, upper and lower. Do you think it will be too much to get both upper and lower done in the same sitting? Maybe i should get it done over 2 days?
Funny you should mention Mexico-this is where i'm getting my veneers done with Dr Torres at Pacific Dental. I will be getting ps done in Mexico and will get both done at the same time.
I am in the UK where veneers etc are ridiculously expensive. Dr Torres has his own lab (is that what it's called?!) on site so they are able to make veneers and adjustments etc whilst you're there.
I am so looking forward to getting my new smile!
Thanks for the info. :)

My dentist discouraged me from getting mine all done in one sitting because he was afraid all of my new teeth would not fit together perfectly, but I also had all of my teeth redone (new fillings, crowns, veneers, etc.). What I mean is he would do for example, lower left and put temporaries on, then come back in a couple of weeks (because he didn't have a lab there) put lower left permanents on and temps on the upper left, etc. So, in the end they all fit together perfectly. But since you will be having these done in another country and not be able to stay that long you might as well get them all done at the same time if the dentist suggests it. If not, you might want to make the vacation longer and do them at different times.
I also grind and have a night guard. My first night guard only fit over my front two teeth. I lost it after about a month. Now, I have a fairly small one that fits over my bottom teeth. If you get to choose which one I could choose the one that fits over your bottom or top teeth becaue it is a lot smaller and doesn't bother you while you are sleeping.
I know what you mean by the UK being expensive. I've visited a few times and it is one pound for two US dollars. Yikes! I also wouldn't recommend getting the whitest color of veneers because they tend to look fake and very obvious. I got mine a couple of shades darker and nobody can even tell that I have veneers. I only had my top teeth done so I had bleached my bottom teeth and then color matched to them. Anyway, I hope this helps and tell me how it went. Also, if you would like to see pics of how mine turned out just send me your e-mail address and I'll send you before and after pics.

Just like cosmetic/plastic surgery, a dental procedure can be very costly in the US or Europe.
Your best alternative would be to grab a medical tourism package and spend only half the cost, with a bonus vacation where you can relax and enjoy.. totally.

Hi Bettina,
so have you ever considered going abroad to central Europe to get porcelain veneers done? it's a nice vacation and will save you a lot of money on the veneers so you dont have to go for the non porcelain ones. here is an article that explains all about veneers and also has good info about cosmetic dentists and clinics in the Czech Republic, one particular hot spot for low cost cosmetic dentistry:
http://www.cosmetic-plastic-surgery.info/procedures/ceramic-facets
the article also talks about costs, has before and after photos and even information about various cosmetic dentists and clinics...
and just so you can see the cost difference, try this:

hope it helps!

It is truly expensive to get porcelain veneers done in UK or US. Have you ever considered Latin America though? It is cheaper to have Cosmetic Dentistry in these countries. Argentina perhaps is a nice country to check out since it is very beautiful and the people are very friendly.
