Everyone one of us wants to have that chiseled and shapely body that we see on the celluloid screen. We all want to be as fit as the smiling models we see on the catalogues. But our problem is that we don't even want to put in half as much of work as they do to shape our bodies. So there can be only one solution to this problem. Liposuction.

Liposuction, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, is a procedure that helps shape your body by removing excess fat from specific areas such as the hips, buttocks and thighs. In other words, it gives one a perfectly shaped body in exchange for a few scars. Liposuction can be stated as the gold mine for plastic surgeons due to its increasing demands in America nowadays.

Liposuction is a relatively novice practice compared to other surgeries. It was invented around 30 years ago. According to Dr. Jeffrey Melton, the director of dermatology at the University of Illinois, liposuction was invented by a gynecologist named Dr.Giorgio Fischer in 1974. Fischer used a curette-like instrument to suck out excess fat at the abdomen area to help make the surgeries around the abdomen area easier. Four years later, French physicians Illouz and Fournier further improved this procedure and made it purely cosmetic.

It was in the early 1980s that the procedure was introduced in the United States of America. The surgery received tremendous response when introduced and the market for the surgery was ever increasing during this time. But the initial enthusiasm soon faded and fear soon set in the minds of many because of the high failure rate for this operation. This was mainly because plastic surgeons combined liposuction with abdominoplasty, another kind of liposuction method but focused around only the abdomen section.

According to the website, lipoinfo.com, two dermatologists named Dr. Jeffrey Klein and Dr. Patrick Lillis invented a method known as the Tumescent Technique in 1985 which uses an anesthetic to help numb the area from which the fat is being extracted. This method, according to many dermatologists is probably the safest method known.

The procedure is in huge demand these days as America fights obesity. The cost of the procedure depends on various factors. For example, the cost depends on the amount of fat being removed. The more the fat; the higher the cost. Also it depends on the gender of the patient. It is harder to remove fat in a male than in a female, because it is said that fat in males is a lot more fibrous and takes a longer tome to remove. So it is costlier for a male to have liposuction done than a female.

According to Melton, the cost for liposuction could be roughly around $2,500 for women and around $3,500 for men. The pre-surgery costs are around $350 for both male and female. The actual surgery for one specific area of liposuction could be around $2,000 and $3,000 for female and male bodies respectively.

There are around 16 clinics in Mobile, Ala. that conduct liposuction or other related surgeries. One of them is Dr. Michael Biven Lyons who also specializes in anti-aging surgeries as well. Most of the cosmetic surgery clinics are situated in and around Dauphin Street.

Plastic surgery can be a risky operation. Many patients discover complications due to liposuction long after the surgery. Also the process of liposuction removes a lot of blood along with the fat. Complications are always there for any surgery and liposuction is no different. There have also been many fatal results due to this surgery. But if one is not willing to take the hard way to sort their bodies out, they have to take a risk.
