Many factors may contribute to your confidence, sexuality,
and femininity, but none is more personal or private
than the appearance of your genitalia. In women, large,
asymmetric or irregular genital labia (lips) can occur
naturally or develop with age, childbirth, hormones,
or even from sexual intercourse.
In most women, the labia minora (inner genital "lips")
are seen only when the legs are separated, however in
some women, large labia minora are visible even when
the legs are not apart, or are barely separated, causing
embarrassment, self-consciousness, distancing in relationships,
and discomfort. Enlarged labia may also be noticeable
in tightly fitting pants, and might cause discomfort
during intercourse or bicycle riding.
For these reasons, many women with asymmetric or large
labia choose to make the labia smaller, more defined,
and/or more symmetric through a procedure known as labiaplasty
or labia minora reduction. (The labia minora are the
inner genital "lips" while the labia majora
are the external genital "lips").
Typically, the procedure takes 1 to 2 hours and is
performed with local anesthesia. Some patients prefer
the addition of IV sedation or even general anesthesia.
You will go home after surgery; there is no need for
an overnight stay in the hospital.
There are several techniques that are used to reduce
the labia minora. These include simply trimming the
excess tissue, removing a wedge-shaped section of tissue,
and removing the epithelium (top layer) of a section
of the labia while keeping the underlying tissue intact.
Your surgeon will have his or her desired method based
on training, experience, and results.
After surgery, you will wear a menstrual-type pad to
absorb any drainage and to provide padding and protection
to the area. You can expect some swelling and discomfort
for 1 to 2 weeks, most women return to work in 2 to
5 days, and sutures are dissolvable. Strenuous activity
and exercise should be avoided for 3 weeks, and you
should not use tampons, douches, or have intercourse
for 6 weeks to allow the surgical area to heal properly.
Complications are rare but include scarring, changes
in sensation, pigmentation (skin color) changes, asymmetry,
infection, or wound separation. The majority of women
are thrilled with their new, more aesthetically desirable
appearance after labiaplasty, and are more confident,
comfortable, and sexually active.
