When the goal is to look your best, not one inch of
the body is overlooked, not even your belly button!
While it is common to have belly button revision with
a tummy tuck, both men and women may desire a different
appearing belly button and not need more extensive surgery.
To alter the look and shape of your belly button alone,
some doctors perform belly button surgery, known as
umbilicoplasty.
The shape of your belly button can be determined from
birth and/or can change over time with weight changes,
pregnancy, or an umbilical (belly button) hernia. There
are several common reasons to request belly button surgery.
The most common is to make a belly button that protrudes
(an "outie") into one that does not protrude
("an innie"). Typically, a protruding belly
button is present from birth (after the umbilical cord
stump falls off), but a belly button that protrudes
with abdominal muscle contraction, such as when coughing,
sitting up, or straining can be a sign of an umbilical
hernia.
Besides correcting a protruding belly button, several
other belly button characteristics are desirable. One
might want a horizontally shaped belly button to take
on more of a vertical orientation. Or, one may also
desire a "T" shape to the belly button, created
by a tiny bit of overhanging abdominal skin over the
top portion of the belly button.
Umbilicoplasty or belly button surgery is performed
with local anesthesia and averages 30 to 90 minutes.
The surgery is usually performed in the doctor's office
operating room, although a surgical facility may be
used, especially if other procedures are performed simultaneously.
Possible risks include scarring, infections, under-correction
or over-correction, or the need for further revisions.
Many people return to work or normal daily activities
the same day, or the next day. Incisions are typically
hidden within the belly button and sutures are either
dissolvable or removed in a 7 to 10 days.
Whether you're showing off your tummy with half shirts
and low-rise pants, or are just self-conscious about
a belly button that never sees the light of day, you
can have the belly button you've always dreamed of.
