Thin skin, large breasts, gravity,
aging, pregnancy, breast-feeding, hormone and weight
changes, and genetics can all contribute to sagging
of the breasts. A mastopexy, or breast lift surgery,
will remove excess skin, raise the breast, reposition
the nipple and areola, and reshape your breasts into
a higher, fuller position.
If you like the size of your breasts
when you are wearing a bra, but just want them raised,
then a breast lift is for you. Some women choose to
also have breast implants
added at the same time as their breast lift surgery
to increase their breast size. On the other hand, a
breast reduction is preferred
if you want your breasts higher, but smaller in size.
Breast lifting or mastopexy usually
takes 1 to 3 hours, and is performed with local anesthesia
and IV sedation, or with general anesthesia. For more
limited breast lifts, local anesthesia may be all that
is needed.
When assessing your particular situation,
many breast surgeons will describe your breast sagging
as mild, moderate, severe, or with pseudo-ptosis. (Ptosis,
pronounced "toe-sis", simply means sagging).
The classification system is based on where the nipple
sits relative to the fold under the breast (known as
the inframammary fold).
mild ptosis - In mild breast
ptosis, the nipple lies just below the fold under the
breast, but is still above the lower portion of breast
tissue.
moderate ptosis - In moderate
breast ptosis, the nipple is further below the fold
than in mild ptosis, but is still above the breast tissue.
severe ptosis - In severe
breast ptosis, the nipple points down and sits well
below the fold as well as below the breast tissue.
pseudo-ptosis - In pseudoptosis,
the nipple is at or above the fold, but the breast tissue
itself is sagging
Depending on your current nipple
and breast position, and your desired outcome, there
are several variations of breast lifts that may address
your needs and give you the fuller, perkier, higher
breasts that you desire.
