Protruding ears are generally the
result of certain folds and convolutions of the ear
not forming and/or excess cartilage in the ear. Ear
surgery, also called otoplasty, can reshape, reposition
or reduce the size or prominence of one or both ears
to give it a more natural appearance. This procedure
is also commonly referred to as "ear pinning'.
While the most common reason for
otoplasty is to correct ear prominence, ear surgery
may also be performed to reduce the size of overly large
ears or to reduce just the earlobes themselves.
The ideal age for surgery to correct
protruding ears is 5 to 6 years old since by this age,
the ear is 90% of its adult size and is almost completely
formed. Because of the ridicule that usually is associated
with protruding ears, it is best to correct this deformity
before the child gets much older.
The normally positioned ear is usually
not more than 2 cenitmeters away from the scalp when
measured from the outer surface of the top of the ear.
The top of the ear is ideally at the level of the eyebrow
and the bottom of the ear is ideally at the level of
the bottom of the nose.
Though ear deformities are
notorious for creating psychological problems, the procedure
is rarely covered by insurance. The actual costs vary
greatly depending upon the deformities involved, whether
one or both ears are involved, the surgeon's experience
and the community where the procedure will be performed.
