There are a number of things you'll
want and need to do to adquately prepare for your face
lift. Be sure to read the preparing
for surgery section for a general overview, including
filling your prescriptions, stocking the refrigerator,
and arranging for after care.
In particular for a facelift, there
are some additional things you can do to make your surgery
and recovery easier. It goes without saying that you
should be at your optimal health before undergoing any
cosmetic surgery. Of course, if you use nicotine in
any form, you should stop at least 6 weeks before surgery.
This includes smoking, chewing nicotine gum, and the
nicotine patch. It's important to get your blood pressure
under control, if it isn't already since even a slightly
higher blood pressure can cause more bleeding during
surgery, and more bruising afterwards, especially in
the delicate facial blood vessels.
If you color your hair, you should
do this the week before surgery, since it will probably
be at least a month after your face lift before you're
allowed to do it again. Have your prescriptions filled
and gather any recovery supplies you might need. This
may include a special pillow to help you sleep more
comfortably, frozen peas and ziploc baggies to use as
cold packs, a scarf or hat to wear outside, and big
sunglasses. Your doctor may ask you
to obtain certain ointments, soaps, or herbal supplements.
Be sure to ask if you will be needing anything special.
On the day of your face lift
surgery, some doctors wish you to cleanse with an antibacterial
soap. (You may have also been instructed to do this
the night before surgery). Don't put on any lotions,
moisturizers, sunscreens, perfume, or makeup. You'll
want to wear loose-fitting clothes that don't need to
be pulled over your head. A cardigan, button-down shirt,
or sweatshirt with a zipper is ideal. Shoes that slip
on rather than lace or buckle will also make it easier
for you to get dressed after your facelift.
Bring along your prescription
medications, and dont forget your hat, scarf, and sunglasses
to wear home after surgery. Leave makeup, jewelry, and
any valuable personal items at home, except for a credit
card or other method of payment that you may need for
the surgery center and anesthesia, if it has not already
been paid for. If you wear glasses or contacts, leave
the contact lenses at home and just bring your glasses.
Finally, if you're going home after surgery, make sure
you have someone responsible to drive you, and someone
to stay with you.
