Rhinoplasty is an operation performed
to change the shape of the nose.
The purpose may be the correction of an alteration of
appearance caused by an injury, correction of a congenital
deformity, or to simply improve the appearance of a
normal nose. Occasionally, rhinoplasty is required to
help improve nasal breathing. In those cases, internal
nasal airway surgery such as septoplasty or turbinectomy
is also performed.
What rhinoplasty can improve:
--Crooked nose
--Nasal hump
--Wide nasal bridge
--Wide nasal tip (bulbous nose)
--Flaring of nostrils
--Overly turned up nose
--Overly turned down nose
--Pinched nasal tip
Most surgeons consider rhinoplasty
as the most complex cosmetic operation, based on the
fact that the surgeon has to combine aesthetic goals
of the surgery with the critical structural concepts.
Rhinoplasty is not just about sculpting but also about
architecture and support.
Incisions are generally placed inside
the nostrils and frequently across the columella (just
above the lip) in a way that leaves no visible scars
after surgery. (read about surgical
techniques)
The surgeon reshapes the cartilage in the nose by cutting,
suturing, and frequently grafting cartilage pieces taken
from inside the nose. Occasionally, other sources of
grafting material may be required such as ears. Rarely,
surgeons use implant materials such as Gore-Tex and
Alloderm. When necessary, the bone is reshaped by cutting
and rasping.
At the time of the rhinoplasty,
additional nose surgery procedures
for nasal airway correction can be easily performed
such as septoplasty and turbinate reduction to improve
breathing ability. Some patients additionally need chin
augmentation to balance the shape and size of the
nose.
risks : The most common risk
of nose surgery is not achieving an expected result.
This scenario may involve a minor imperfection that
is acceptable to the surgeon and the patient. Alternatively,
the problem may require a minor revision procedure to
correct the problem. The most serious complication is
a secondary deformity due to a structural problem that
requires a revision rhinoplasty.
An expert rhinoplasty surgeon can
largely avoid such a complication. However, an accepted
revision rate for rhinoplasty ranges from 5% to 15%
of cases. Most of these should be minor.
Occasionally, a restricted nasal airway can result from
the procedure.
Rarely, nasal bleeding that requires medical intervention
can occur up to 10 days after the operation. Prolonged
bruising under the eyes can occur rarely and last up
to 6 weeks.
financial considerations : Insurance coverage
for nose surgery is possible for cases of post-traumatic
deformity, however they will only pay to return your
nose to its normal appearance. Any changes of the nose
beyond that are patient's financial responsibility.
The cost of rhinoplasty can be as little as $1500 for
a minor correction performed with another nasal procedure
covered by insurance to as much as $10,000 for a cosmetic
rhinoplasty performed by a top rhinoplasty surgeon.
The average cost is usually $5,000 which includes the
anesthesia and surgical facility fee.
