If you're
unsatisfied with the excess fat around your chin, neck
and cheeks, you're not alone: No one wants to see "jowlies",
a double chin or a very round face when they look in
the mirror. Unfortunately, diet and exercise alone are
rarely enough to remedy these gifts that heredity or
the natural aging process leave behind.
If you're
healthy, active and relatively close to your weight
but your face still looks disproportionately full, a
minimally invasive cosmetic procedure called facial
liposuction (also called sub-mental or sub-mentum liposuction),
may be your solution. Those unwanted fatty deposits
that wreak havoc with your appearance could be eradicated
safely and effectively resulting in a dramatic re-shaping
of your face - all with a minimum of downtime.
Introduced in the 1970's, liposuction
has come a tremendously long way: Once considered major
surgery, it is now thought to be a relatively safe and
simple process with far less pain and no more lengthy
hospital stays. What's more, in the past few years,
significant new advances in liposculpture technique
have rendered serious complications virtually non-existent.
the facial liposuction procedure:
Technically, the facial liposuction procedure entails
removing small volumes of fat from specific areas through
tiny hollow tubes called "canulas." Inserted
into very small and discreetly placed puncture wounds
under your chin or jaw line, the canula is moved back
and forth to break up the localized fatty tissue. Attached
to a high-pressure vacuum-like system, the canula is
then used to literally suction out the surplus fat.
Though a meager amount of fat is actually removed during
the surgery, the results can often be dramatic. Improvements
may include a thinner facial appearance and a considerably
more refined neck and jaw line.
Facial liposuction is generally
performed in an outpatient surgery center with local
anesthesia or local with IV sedation. Taking only 30
minutes to an hour, it is often performed alone, but
it can also be used in combination with a variety of
other facial techniques including eyelid surgery, face
lifts, neck lifts, chemical peels or laser re-surfacing.
Alternatively, if it's only your lower cheek area that
has excessive fat, a procedure called buccal fat pad
excision may be what you're looking for.
facial liposuction recovery:
After your facial liposuction surgery you should expect
to experience mild discomfort with a little swelling
and/or bruising, both of which will ordinarily subside
within 7-10 days. Some patients will also require a
stitch or two to close the incisions made by the canula.
Your doctor will apply a gentle compression dressing
and he or she may recommend an elastic chin bandage
be worn to expedite the healing process and aid in the
retraction of the skin.
Recovery from facial liposuction
is typically speedy; most patients return to work within
a week. Depending on the elasticity of your skin, you
may see some immediate results after your surgery. However,
the fully re-contoured you will emerge gradually over
a 3 to 6-month period. Although the results are considered
permanent, a major weight gain could cause the remaining
fat cells to enlarge.
risks of facial liposuction:
Of course all surgeries have risks. Those associated
with facial liposuction are minimal but they include
permanent numbness, embolism, accumulation of fluid
or blood underneath the skin, discoloration, contour
irregularities, infection, nerve injury, and persistent
swelling.
cost of facial liposuction:
The cost for re-sculpturing your face, cheeks, chin
and neck with liposuction ranges from $1000-$4000. Unfortunately,
due to its' cosmetic nature, insurance won't apply.
