ANESTHESIA GLOSSARY

Anesthesia: Without sensation.

Anesthetic: The class of medication that blocks the sensation of pain.

Anesthesiology: The practice of medicine dedicated to the relief of pain and total care of the surgical patient before, during and after surgery.

Anesthesiologist: A medical doctor that is an anesthesia specialist.

Nurse Anesthetist: An advanced practice nurse that is an anesthesia specialist.

Local: An inexpensive method of anesthesia whereby an injection of medication numbs the surgical site only; used for minor procedures or in combination with IV sedation.


Tumescent: Safe, local anesthesia technique that distends the tissues, commonly used during liposuction.


Nerve Block: Local anesthetic injected at a particular nerve numbs a region of the body.


MAC/IV Sedation: IV medication used for sedation and pain while the patient is kept sleepy.


General: IV and inhaled medication used to make patient unconscious and unresponsive.
