hair transplant techniques
There are several techniques used
in hair restoration surgery. These include scalp
flaps, scalp reductions,
scalp extension, and
hair transplants. Over the years, hair transplant surgery
has evolved from the obvious cornrow "plugs"
of 15 to 20 hairs each to the very delicate operation
that is most commonly used now known as follicular unit
hair transplantation.
With follicular unit hair transplantation,
the hairs are divided into their naturally occuring
groupings of 1 to 4 hairs. Transferring hair follicles
one, two, or three at a time is a slow, tedious process
but this does allows for the most natural results. In
one surgery to treat male pattern baldness, it is common
to transplant 1000 to 2000 hairs. Larger areas of hair
loss may require up to 3000 or 4000 hairs per session.
Many patients will repeat the hair transplant procedure
2 or 3 times, depending on the extent of their hair
loss.
for natural results - Some
variations exist within hair transplant techniques that
can affect the final outcome. The small hole in the
scalp into which the grafted hair is placed can be made
with a tool that removes a tiny piece of skin, or with
a needle or tiny scalpel. The smallest hole or slit
possible that will allow for placement of the hair should
be employed.
The hair should be placed in the
direction in which the hair would normally be growing
in that location. Some hair grows straight out, while
others grow at an angle.
The edge of the grafted area also
contributes to the final result. Since naturally occurring
hair does not usually have a sharp demarcation between
hair bearing and non-hair bearing areas, scattering
the hair graft placement at the hair line will offer
a more natural, less obvious appearance.
risks - Hair transplant surgery
does involve some localized risks of infection and scarring
either from where the hair was taken (the donor site)
or where it was transplanted (the recipient site). It
is possible that the grafts don't "take" and
the hair falls out, although in most cases, this is
followed by regrowth. Depending on the surgeon's skill,
your grafts may be obvious or the hair may not fall
or lie in a natural pattern.
