who is a good candidate for hair
transplant surgery?
Hair restoration can be used for
both men and women who have localized areas of hair
loss. Women more than men suffer from diffuse hair loss
which is not ideal for hair transplant surgery.
If you are young, and losing your
hair quickly, it may be hard to "stay ahead of
the game" with hair grafts. Since you will continue
to lose hair, you may end up with odd areas of baldness
adjacent to the transplanted areas into which you will
then need additional hair transplants.
Thicker, denser, curlier hair yields
better results, but hair transplant surgery can still
be peformed with straight, thin hair, too.
Longer, dense hair in the donor
area will help to conceal any scars from where the hair
is taken.
Blond, white, or light-colored hair
will blend in better with any scars, while dark brown
or black hair may contrast with any hypo-pigmented (white)
scars.
The biggest limitation is if there
is insufficient donor hair on the back of the head to
be redistributed to thinning and balding areas.
Realistic expectations are essential.
If you have little hair remaining, and expect hair transplant
surgery to give you a full head of hair, then you are
not an ideal candidate for hair transplant surgery.
Like any surgery, good health is
required. (Certain illness or medications can cause
hair loss. These should
be addressed before continuing with hair transplant
surgery).
