hair transplant recovery
The first night after surgery,
the local anesthetics will begin to wear off... There
may be some minor discomfort at the donor area from
where the hair grafts were taken, but not usually in
the area where the grafts were placed. Occasionally
there is some tissue swelling after surgery, and it
is normal to see some dried, crusting blood on the scalp.
Your hair transplant surgeon will give you specific
recovery intsructions, however the following may be
helpful.
swelling - Swelling of the
forehead and eyelids may occur after hair transplant
surgery as the swelling from the scalp area drains downward
with the effects of gravity. It may help to massage
or smooth the swelling out towards your temples to expedite
reabsorption. Sleep with your head elevated on 2 to
3 pillows. Limiting your activity and using cool compresses
may alleviate this, but it will eventually go away with
time, usually within a week or two.
showering - Most hair transplant
surgeons will allow their patients to shower the next
day, and gently wash their hair on the 2nd day after
surgery. You should use gently flowing lukewarm water,
but on the first day, do not allow the water to hit
directly on the newly transplanted hair. Pat dry and
let the hair air then air dry. If you have dried blood
on the scalp, hydrogen peroxide can be applied and rinsed
out in the shower. After day 3 you may scrub the wet
scabs with a wet washcloth. Do not pick at resistant
scabs. Most of them come off between days 4 and 7.
activity - You can return
to work the day after surgery provided your job doesn't
involve heavy lifting. Remember you just went through
a 5 to 8 hour procedure to restore your natural growing
hair. Your body needs time to recover. So that means
no heavy lifting or strenuous exerting for a period
of seven to ten days, after which you can return to
your normal routine.
sutures and staples - Sutures
or staples should be removed 7 to 10 days after surgery.
(These will have been used to close the donor area).
ingrown hair - If you develop
a small red, pimple-like bump in the transplanted are,
this most likely represents an ingrown hair or a piece
of tissue trapped in a hair graft incision. Warm compresses,
followed by gently squeeqing, will often allow material
to escape, solving the problem. You may clean the pimple
with a hyrdogen peroxide solution after squeezing, then
rinse off. If the problem continue, or you are unsure
if you should do anything, call your doctor.
warning signs - If you develop
sudden swelling in the incision area, this could represent
a blood vessel opening up, which may lead to a hematoma
(blood collection under the skin). Apply pressure with
the palm of your hand, and call your doctor.
regrowth - It is not uncommon
for the transplanted hair to fall out after several
months before it starts to regrow. It may be anywhere
from 3 to 9 months before the hair takes root and really
begins to fill in as you had hoped.
