At your consultation, your permanent
cosmetics technician will evaluate your facial features,
skin tone, and eye color. He or she will also ask you
about your expectations and goals for permanent makeup
procedures. Medical history, consent, and pre/post procedure
instruction forms will be provided. Pigment colors will
be discussed, selected and photographs taken.
Individuals with medical conditions
that may be of concern during and after procedures,
such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood-clotting
problems, auto-immune conditions, or the tendency to
form scaring, or fever blisters (for lip procedures)
will be asked to consult with their doctor before undergoing
a Permanent Makeup procedure. Permanent Makeup candidates
must also have healthy skin.
Once you have selected your permanent
cosmetic technician, decided on the areas you wish to
have treated, and discussed with your technician the
look and colors that you wish to create, the procedure
can begin.
Cleansing - The skin is cleaned
with an antiseptic that can kill up to 99.9% of the
bacteria on the area within 30 seconds.
Numbing - In most cases,
a topical anesthetic is applied and then a waiting period
of 20 to 45 minutes passes before the skin is sufficiently
numb. Shop

Design Guides - Once the
anesthetic has taken effect, a design guide is marked
onto the skin using a surgical marking pen to direct
the technician in the application of the pigment. At
this point, you and the technician can review your desired
results and make sure that the guide reflects what you
want the final result to look like. (A design guide
is normally applied only for the eyebrow and lip procedures).
The actual design and pigment
color selection are elements that must be met to the
client's satisfaction before these procedures can begin.
Lips - When applying
pigment to the lips, one can expect some bleeding as
this is a very vascular area; however topical anesthetics
that contain epinephrine are generally used after the
skin is broken, and can provide additional anesthetic
blocking and reduction of bleeding.
Eyeliner - The most
important element of an eyeliner procedure is to keep
the eye moist at all times. There is very little bleeding
if any associated with an eyeliner procedure, however
tearing is not uncommon.
Eyebrows - Eyebrow
procedures pose the least challenge as far as the actual
tattooing process. The skin is thicker in the eyebrow
location and there is little discomfort experienced
by the client, and minimal body fluids produced.
Discomfort - The permanent
cosmetic procedure is not normally painful, this varies
from person to person. If the technician performing
the procedure is well trained in the use of their equipment
and using products and or techniques to handle the skin
effectively, there is normally only a sensation of pressure
and/or mild discomfort.
If a person is reluctant to pursue
permanent cosmetic services only because discomfort
is anticipated, there are technicians that work in medical
environments that provide prescription strength topical
and/or injectable anesthetics to further reduce the
discomfort and allay any fears. Shop

While injected anesthetics can reduce
discomfort, they can also cause bruising and swelling
in the injected area that would otherwise not be present
during the healing period. If injectable anesthetics
are not used and the client is uncomfortable, the technician
merely ceases the procedure for a few minutes, applies
additional topical anesthetic, and then proceeds once
the topical anesthetic has taken affect.
Length of the procedure -
The length of time required to complete the process
is very dependent upon the procedure being performed
and the technician performing the procedure. Typically
appointments are scheduled for 1 to 2 hours, however
time required for applying design guides and allowing
adequate penetration of topical anesthetics all factor
into the time allotted. With 20 to 45 minutes required
for the topical anesthetic to take effect, the actual
time spent applying the pigment is only a portion of
the entire procedure time.
