There are two types of tools used
to apply permanent cosmetics, the hand tool method and
the machine method. The hand tools used today are a
derivative of ancient hand modalities, all of which
included a sharp instrument utilized to implant pigment
under the skin.
Although hand tools have largely
been replaced by mechanized equipment, there is a growing
number of technicians that would not consider using
any other type of tool for the application of permanent
cosmetics, touting control, client comfort, and convenience
as just a few of the hand tool's attributes. There are
several manufacturers of hand tool devices to select
from, the majority of which provide their products and
supplies to the buyer in pre-sterilized packaging.
Among machine type tools, the permanent
cosmetics technician uses either a rotary pen or a coil
machine. The rotary pen, also called the cosmetic pen,
is a small machine type tool specifically developed
for the permanent cosmetic industry. This tool comes
with varying strengths of power sources and available
needle configurations. The name "rotary" comes
from the manner in which the needle moves - in a somewhat
circular path. Portability, comfort and a lower level
of machine sound than the coil machine makes this machine
very popular in the industry. The newer version of the
rotary pen is a larger version of the original design
that has been engineered for high tech performance and
appearance appeal and is driven by a digital read out
power unit. Disposable needle and components parts are
provided to the buyer in pre-sterilized packaging.
The Coil Machine is a traditional
tattoo machine. These implements are the most powerful
of the three types of modalities of tools used for permanent
cosmetic tattooing and accept a wide variety of needle
configurations. Needles are held in place inside a tube
affixed to the machine by a screw and anchored at the
rear of the machine on a "nipple". To create
proper tension on the needle, one or two rubber bands
cross from the needle to the base of the coil. The path
of implantation motion is linear as opposed to the rotary
pens circular path.
Regardless of the modality your
technician uses, the primary importance to you is your
technician's requirement to use one time use sterilized
needles. Although a majority of technicians prefer
to use associated disposable machine components, there
are some that still use machine components such as tubes
that require proper cleaning, storage and sterilization.
For that reason, many technicians maintain an autoclave
on site for sterilizing purposes. Disposable does not
equate with pre-sterilized. It is the responsibility
of the technician to make sure each component they use
has been individually sterilized before use on a client.
As a client involved with
a service that requires breaking of the skin with a
needle, you may wish to request your technician show
you the needle and machine parts to be used during your
procedure in their sealed, pre-sterilized packaging
before the machine is assembled and the procedure commences.
