The process of straightening
teeth has been available for many years, but it used
to be that only children went to the orthodontist. Today,
about 25% of all orthodontic patients are adults.
In the past, orthodontics involved
the placement of metal bands around the teeth. A wire
was placed thru a little bracket attached to the band
to slowly move the teeth until they were straight. This
resulted in a mouth full of metal that looked like railroad
tracks.
Thanks to new technology, the metal
mouth look has virtually been eliminated. Advances in
adhesive bonding allow the orthodontist to place small
brackets on the front of the teeth that are more comfortable
and barely noticeable. Clear brackets can also be used,
though they are more expensive.
A stainless steel wire is still
used to move the teeth. The orthodontist varies the
size of the wire, depending on how much pressure is
needed. This pressure slowly moves the teeth through
the bone, allowing the orthodontist to move the teeth
where he or she wants them.
Once the teeth are straightened,
retainers are usually worn to keep the teeth in their
new position.
There are some cases where only
retainers are needed to straighten the teeth. This is
especially good for those who spend their days talking
with others, or are in the public eye. In addition,
Invisalign is a company that makes a type of teeth straightening
appliance that is totally clear, and removable.
