Labial - pertaining to the lips

Labiaplasty - surgery to reshape the labia

Lacrimal - relating to the tear duct system

Lactic acid - a chemical derived from milk used as a mild exfoliant

Lagophthalmos - the inability to fully close the upper eyelid

Large volume liposuction - refers to removing large amounts of fat, usually considered to be removal of more than 8-10 liters of fat

LASEK - LASer Epithelial Keratomileusis; eye surgery to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism for patients with a flat or thin eye

Laser - acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Used to resurface skin; remove unwanted veins, hair, blemishes, and tattoos; and make incisions that bleed very little.

Laser-assisted liposuction - technology using light energy to break up fat

Laser resurfacing (laser peel) - use of laser to vaporize damaged skin while leaving surrounding tissues undamaged; used to eliminate or modify unsightly skin defects

Laser Thermal Keratoplasty - surgery on the cornea of the eye using heat energy to treat farsightedness; abbreviated as LTK-

LASIK - laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis; eye surgery to treat or cure near- or far-sightedness and astigmatism

Lipstick bleed lines - deep, vertical lines that raidate around the mouth as one ages, especially in smokers

Liquid nitrogen - dry ice used to exfoliate the skin or freeze off unwanted tissue

Local anesthetic - an anesthetic injected to numb the area being treated

Local with sedation - medication administered thorugh a vein to cause sleep in conjunction with local anesthesia

Lop ear deformity - a congenital condition in which the top of the ear folds forward

Lupus - a connective tissue disorder, sometimes diagnosed by a butterfly shaped red rash on the face

Lymph - clear fluid that resembles blood plasma, containing primarily white blood cells

Lymphedema - swelling a result of obstruction of lymphatic vessels of lymph nodes
